Don’t wake them up.
This project consists of a series of pencil drawings on paper, including two works made with pencil and my own blood on paper.
The project explores the final photograph taken of a child after death and before burial: the image of a child wrapped in a white shroud, the last photograph that circulates through the media. These children were killed as a result of wars in Palestine, Syria, and Jordan, and their images have become records of their final moments. Through drawing, I sought to engage with this final moment and preserve its trace.
The works were sent by courier to Algeria to participate in an Arab art festival. However, upon arrival in Algeria, the shipment was refused because the sender’s address was marked as “Jerusalem.” From the Algerian perspective, the address was interpreted as a reference to Israel and was therefore considered a form of normalization.
The shipment travelled from Jerusalem to Jordan and then to Algeria. After its entry was refused, it was decided that the works would be returned. They were sent from Algeria to Dubai and then back to Jordan. Upon arrival in Jordan, the works were destroyed, according to what the courier representative told me.
All that remains of this project are photographs of the drawings, photographs documenting the moments in which the works were created in my studio, and this story.
